How We Shoot Bridal Portraits at Noon in May

Home / Blogs / How We Shoot Bridal Portraits at Noon in May

Wedding dates get fixed to a muhurat, not to good light, and a fair number of Delhi NCR weddings land in April, May or early June — direct overhead sun, harsh shadows under the eyes, and skin tones that blow out if you're not deliberate about it. Here's what we actually do.

Shade-mapping before the couple arrives

The first thing we do at any midday summer shoot is walk the venue alone, ten minutes before portraits start, identifying every patch of open shade — under a canopy, beside a building, inside a covered walkway. Open shade gives soft, even light without a single flash or scrim, and mapping it in advance means zero time wasted once the bride is ready.

Scrims and diffusion, not just shade

Where no shade exists, we bring a collapsible scrim — a translucent panel held between the sun and the subject — which softens harsh direct light into something closer to an overcast day. It's a two-person job, one holding the scrim, one shooting, but it turns unusable noon light into flattering portrait light in under a minute of setup.

Fill flash for eye light

Even in open shade, eyes can go dark and lifeless without a catch light. A small amount of fill flash, bounced rather than direct, adds just enough sparkle to the eyes without overpowering the soft ambient light doing the main work.

Timing the 40-minute window deliberately

If we have any control over scheduling, we push bridal portraits to the very edges of the midday block — as close to 11am or as close to 4pm as the day allows, rather than dead noon. Even 90 minutes of difference measurably softens the shadow angle.

What we tell couples booking a summer wedding

Don't assume a May or June date means compromised photographs. It means a different technique, planned for in advance rather than improvised on the day. Every couple we've shot in peak summer has gotten portraits as soft and flattering as a November wedding — the difference is entirely in the preparation.
