We write a lot about how to plan a wedding photography timeline in the abstract. This is what an actual one looked like — haldi to reception, including the parts that didn't go according to plan, because those are usually the parts that make the best photographs.
Day one: haldi and mehendi
Priya's haldi started forty minutes late because her mother's flight from Bengaluru was delayed — the kind of thing no run sheet accounts for. We used the extra time to shoot getting-ready detail: jewellery laid out, the yellow dupatta being ironed, her younger cousin practising the mehendi design on her own hand out of nerves. Some of the family's favourite images from the entire wedding came from that unplanned forty minutes.
The mehendi itself ran in the courtyard of the family home rather than a rented venue — increasingly common for the smaller pre-wedding functions, and genuinely better for photography. Natural light, familiar space, grandparents seated where they're comfortable rather than where a banquet hall places them.
Day two: the wedding
The muhurat was set for 11:40pm — common for weddings following a traditional pandit's calendar rather than convenience. This meant the whole day inverted: bridal portraits at 6pm rather than morning, baraat arrival close to 10pm, pheras stretching past midnight.
We built the crew schedule around this from the start — two photographers rotating rest breaks through the evening rather than one crew running fourteen straight hours, which is where photograph quality genuinely degrades on late-muhurat weddings. Karan's baraat arrived with a full dhol section and nearly ninety minutes late, which we'd flagged as likely during planning and scheduled around rather than around a fixed time.
Day three: reception
Held at a Greater Noida banquet hall rather than a hotel — a deliberate budget decision by the family that let them put more toward the photography and film package than the venue. It photographed beautifully once we brought supplemental warm lighting to counter the venue's cooler ceiling fixtures, which is the standard fix we apply on most banquet hall bookings.
What the family said afterward
Priya's mother told us, unprompted, that the unplanned haldi delay produced her favourite photograph of the whole wedding — a candid frame of Priya laughing with her cousin, shot because we had time to wait rather than rush. It's a reminder we come back to often: a timeline with room to breathe produces better photographs than one run to the minute.
