Most couples meet three photographers, look at three portfolios, and pick on instinct. The portfolio is the easy part — every studio shows you its best forty frames from four hundred weddings. These are the questions that actually separate them.
1. Who, specifically, is shooting my wedding?
Ask for names, and ask whether they are staff or freelancers hired for your date. A studio that books a hundred weddings a year cannot possibly send its founder to all of them. There is nothing wrong with a lead you have not heard of — but you should meet them before you sign, not on the morning of the haldi.
2. What happens if that person is ill?
The right answer is a named backup who already has your shot list and your family notes. The wrong answer is a vague reassurance.
The single most common regret we hear is not about image quality. It is about a relative nobody photographed.
3. Are both sides covered at the same time?
When the bride is getting ready in Ghaziabad and the groom's baraat is assembling in Noida, one team cannot do both. Confirm in writing how many crews are assigned and where each will be.
4. How many delivered images, and edited to what standard?
"Unlimited photos" usually means unlimited unedited exports. Ask for a number of hand-graded frames. Six hundred properly finished images beats four thousand raw ones every time.
5. What are the delivery dates — in the contract?
Not "four to six weeks, roughly". A date, written down, with what happens if it slips. Ours are 7 days for express selects, 4–5 weeks for the full gallery, 8–10 weeks for the film.
6. Who owns the photographs?
You should have a perpetual personal-use licence at minimum. Check whether the studio may use your images for marketing, and say so upfront if you would rather they did not.
7. What is excluded from the quote?
Travel, accommodation, drone permissions, extra hours, album revisions beyond a certain number, and second-city shoots. Get each one itemised.
8. How is the album designed and approved?
Ask to see the paper stock and the binding in person. A layflat, fine-art page costs more and lasts decades; a press-printed spine cracks within a few years of being opened at family gatherings.
The two most couples forget
Sound. If you are commissioning a film, ask whether the vows are recorded with lapel mics or captured on the camera from twenty feet away. It is the difference between a film you rewatch and one you don't.
The relatives list. Write down, by name, the fifteen people who must appear in photographs. Hand it to your photographer a week before. It takes ten minutes and it removes the single most common regret.
